The place where the market is today has for many centuries been important to commerce. It was not until 1840 the market had legal status, and counters for fish and meat were built.
La Boqueria is often congested. Do you want to get an overview of the area, be sure to be there before noon. For about 1 euro you get a glass of freshly squeezed juice and there is also a lot of food to eat on the spot.
